Give Away: Strawesome Glass Straw

We love Strawesome straws here. They are pretty, and non-toxic and so much fun to drink with! My girls especially love using them for drinking all sorts of drinks, but when it comes to cups of broth they are required. I love that they are strong and heat stable so I don’t have to worry about them leaching plastics or other chemicals in their warm broth. I also love that they are see through so that I can be sure that I get them clean. We have some metal straws that I also like but I do worry about using them with anything but water because I can’t see inside and know if it came clean.

I have heard some concern with giving young children glass straws. We first started collecting Strawesome straws over 3 years ago when we started on GAPS. My youngest was nearly 2 years old at the time and we let her use the glass straws. These straw are made of borosilicate glass tubing which is the strongest commercially available glass. This is the same glass that Pyrex® is made from. They are strong but if they are thrown on the floor they may break. We have dropped straws a few times and broken one. They are a nice thick glass but they still are glass. We have hardwood floors. I suspect they would break every time when dropped on tile. My family believes in giving children reasonably fragile dishes from an early age. By reasonably fragile I mean Corelle and heavy glass, not bone china plates and crystal goblets. We teach them to respect the dishes and are there to supervise meal times. We were already giving my younger daughter glass drinking glasses so adding a glass straw was not a problem. Use your judgement to l know if your child is able to handle this sort of a straw.

For my family we have a variety of straws but the ones we use the most are the short smoothie straws and the standard sized smoothie straws. This is because they require less suction power to pull up a lot of liquid. My older dd who likes sensory input and working hard has her own skinny straw for those times when this appeals to her. My other daughter has a somewhat low tone issue and so for her the smoothie width short straw lets her get more liquid up with less effort. As a mom I don’t love the bent straws because they tend to drip on the table. My children however love them. I don’t have any of the slightly bent straws but those might be a good compromise.

I put the straws into the dishwasher silverware basket and they always come clean unless they have dried on smoothie inside of them. Those require a soak and a straw brush to get them clean. Or so I hear. I never leave dishes too long here. *wink*

Strawesome has offered one “designs” straw to one lucky winner. Below is a photo of an example of some of the straws they have available right now. You will not be able to choose what straw you receive and it may not look exactly like any of these.

I think I’m already signed up for it but I’m not sure.

    Take care,
    Amanda
