Saturday Sources: Three Rivers Community Farm - CSA

Posted by on May 25, 2013 in Blog, Gardening, Local Sources, photo | 0 comments

My ideas about healthy food have evolved over the years. In the fall of 2006 my new neighbor introduced me to a farmer’s market that sold produce and meats from local farmers. I found it to be an amazing thing to meet those farmers and speak to them about their practices and begin to get to know them. I loved the fresh produce and the new foods that we tried. This was certainly a step up from shopping at Whole Foods. At about that same time I became aware of CSA’s. CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. You give a farm money and they give you a share of their produce every week for the length of their growing season. I loved this idea as soon as I heard of it but I quickly learned that joining a CSA...

Saturday Sources: Summer Sources of Local Food

Posted by on May 18, 2013 in Blog, Cherries On Top, Local Sources, photo, St Louis | 2 comments

Hello everyone. As you know I am a big fan of the real food movement in St. Louis and a big part of that is shopping to get as much of my food as possible from local farmers. This can be a bit more work than just running out to the closest grocery store when you need an ingredient but we find it to be worth it. Thankfully here in St. Louis we do have lots of choices for sources for local, in season, products from nearby farms. Farmer’s markets, independent grocers, and sourcing directly from farms are the main ways that local foods get into the hands of the people of St. Louis. I’m going to share about grocery stores and farmer’s markets in this edition of Saturday Sources. I’ll talk about CSA’s and sourcing directly from farmers on a...

Saturday Sources Traveling Tea

Posted by on Feb 16, 2013 in Blog, Local Sources, St Louis | 0 comments

Today’s interview is with Kateri of Traveling Tea. Traveling Tea is a local business in St. Louis that is dedicated to tea. She sells a wide variety of teas of all varieties and flavors. Most of her teas are organic and many are also fair trade. My family has enjoyed many of her teas over the past several years. Her peach is a particular favorite of my husbands. I hope you will enjoy learning a bit more about Kateri and her company Traveling-Tea. Even if you aren’t local to us her company offers mail order from her website. -PattyLA What made you decide to create a Tea company and where does it’s name come from? I have always preferred tea to coffee and the lack of places to purchase good quality, organic teas in St. Louis had long been...

Saturday Sources: Hanley Fold Farm Goats Milk Soap

Posted by on Feb 2, 2013 in Blog, Local Sources | 0 comments

Today edition of Saturday Sources is a bit different from the past couple. Instead of a producer of an edible product today I am interviewing Anne of Hanley Fold Farm. Hanley Fold Farm produces and sells goats milk soap as well as lotion bars and lip balm. I will admit that I have a particular weakness for homemade soap. If you haven’t tried it you really should. It is so much more moisturizing than anything I have ever purchased commercially. There is one other distinct difference. These are available for mail order! My readers from all over the world can go to their website and order some soap and other products to be delivered. Those of you who are local to me can get Hanley Fold Farm Soap at many of the local farmer’s markets as well as at...

Saturday Sources: The Farmer’s Larder

Posted by on Jan 26, 2013 in Blog, Local Sources, St Louis | 0 comments

Well things don’t always go as you planned. My life got so busy that this series fell by the wayside for a bit but here is another installment. I have been purchasing meat products from The Farmer’s Larder since the first year that they were at “my” farmer’s market, Tower Grove Farmer’s Market. I was more than a little excited when I first discovered that their kielbasa was sweetened only with honey! That was an early product that we grew to love. Another favorite is their smoked ham hocks. I use them in my Savory Lentil Stew with Smoked Ham Hock Recipe.     What is The Farmer’s Larder? What do you do? We are a small family business run primarily by Anne Matoushek and son Lucian. Tom and other family members help out wherever they can. The Farmers’ Larder...

Saturday Sources: Missouri Grassfed Beef

Posted by on Nov 17, 2012 in Local Sources, St Louis, Uncategorized | 0 comments

This is my second edition of Saturday Sources and I am pleased to have an interview with Jeremy Parker of Missouri Grassfed Beef. I have been getting my beef from Jeremy of Missouri Grassfed Beef for several years. I love the good relationship I have with him and so many of the farmers that I purchase from regularly. I know he is passionate about what he does so I wanted to ask him some questions to share with all of you. Even if you aren’t local to us here in St. Louis hopefully these questions and answers will help you to find a good source of grassfed beef near you. Every farmer is going to do things a little bit different but this should give you some ideas about the kinds of questions you should be asking. Oh and...

Saturday Sources: Week1- Winter Sources

Posted by on Nov 11, 2012 in Local Sources, St Louis | 2 comments

Today is my first edition of Saturday Sources (yes I am aware that it is actually Sunday. Sometimes that happens.) Over the next few months I hope to highlight different farmers and producers in the St. Louis area for you to learn more about them. Most of these posts will be interviews. Next week will be an interview with my Grassfed Beef Farmer. For my first edition, however, I want to talk about our opportunities here in St. Louis to get local food and products in the winter. We really are blessed here to have lots of options and while it may not be quite as convenient as in the summer we have a market going somewhere in the metro area nearly every weekend of the month all winter long! Wow! One fun thing about the winter season is that I...

Have you visited a Salt Room?

Posted by on Feb 24, 2012 in Local Sources, St Louis | 3 comments

Have you heard of Halotherapy? What about a Salt room? No? I hadn’t either until this summer. It just so happens that I am a very lucky American to have a Salt room in my vicinity. There are more opening up all the time so you just might be too. I have tried to find a comprehensive listing of salt rooms around the country to include on here but I can’t seem to find one. Sorry you will have to google it for your own area yourself. Here I am in the salt room. A friend shared about the St. Louis Salt Room on her Facebook page this summer and I’m always up for learning about an alternative therapy so I agreed to go with her and check it out. We don’t have any major symptoms that are obviously...

Acupuncture

Posted by on Jan 2, 2012 in Detox, healing, Local Sources, St Louis | 2 comments

I have used acupuncture extensively in my healing journey. I realize that many are not familiar with this ancient healing art and how much it can do for you. Acupuncture is one piece of an ancient medical approach referred to as Traditional Chinese Medicine. TCM involves various methods of assessing the health of the body through examining the tongue, face, pulse and symptoms. Treatment usually involves some combination of herbs, diet changes and acupuncture sessions. Not everyone will get every treatment every time and different practitioners seem to favor one approach over others. Acupuncture is a method of stimulating various points on the body to cause different effects. This stimulation has traditionally been done with thin needles but is also done with electric stimulation and even lasers. I have had each kind of acupuncture from different practitioners and they each seem...
