The state of My Health Summer 2012.
This isn’t the greatest photo of me. My hair is doing something strange and the shadows are weird across my face. BUT this is also one of my favorite photos that I have taken recently. It is commemorating my victory over sickness. I am in the park near my house where I walked with my children to meet up with friends. I travel to this park every week to meet these same friends but for the past 2 years that weekly meeting has involved a car if I was able to make the trip at all. On this day I walked the half mile to the park and I felt good doing it for the first time since 2010. I wasn’t sure I was ever going to be able to make that trip on foot again and I had...

Photo by eagle102.net Brrrr!!!! Doesn’t this look like fun? Jumping into icy cold water and hanging out for a bit? Many of you know I have been following the Leptin Reset for a few months. Less than a month ago, Jack Kruse came out with a new twist on this. You can read his first post on it here. I’m still trying to understand all of the science behind it but I am excited at the possibility of it fixing my thyroid. Mercola writes about it here. The basic premise is that you teach your body to adapt to the cold using ice water. This has massive impact on how your body works. If I can believe what he has said this will increase your metabolism, make your thyroid work better, fix your adrenal issues, resolve diabetes, and melt...

You can see my other posts about the Leptin Reset here Leptin Reset Leptin Reset Update #1 I feel like a new day is dawning for me but it is like this picture. Just barely visible. Hard to know how long till full light arrives. Of course I am a perpetual optimist so take that with a grain of salt. I always think that health is always over the next horizon. This is a bit of a disjointed update. I apologize for that. I have been busy on other blog and family business and realized today that I hadn’t updated my Leptin reset situation lately so I have dashed this off and am hoping I don’t miss too many typos and sentence fragments. It has been more than 2 months since I started the Leptin reset. Among other things I am...

Part 1 is here. If you haven’t got your health you haven’t got anything. If you haven’t seen the Princess Bride you are really missing out. There is one memorable scene where the prince and Count Rugen are talking before Count Rugen goes to torture Wesley. The prince is talking about how busy he is with his evil deeds and the Count agrees and tells him, well see for yourself. You can see more of the clip here If you haven’t got your health Over the past couple of years I have thought of those words often. Mostly because I didn’t have my health and it truly made it seem like I didn’t have anything. I would think back to how glibly I frittered it away staying up too late, too often when in college. Then the stress of...
Read MoreWhy we started the GAPS diet
In November 2009 my family was in a crisis. My biggest concern at that time was my youngest. She was 21 months and had terrible problems with reflux and candida. She was on a very strict elimination diet that while it helped, did not completely eliminate her rashes or pain. This meant many sleepless nights for both of us and taking multiple medications that had to be compounded to avoid her allergens. This is not to mention the visits to the GI and the allergist. I’ve been pretty holistically minded for many years. Multiple specialists and rx medications was not how I had envisioned myself managing health problems in my family and yet there I was in the midst of it and unable to see any other way to find relief for her.My older daughter was 5 and we had been taking her...

Give up Snacking? In December? What am I, Crazy? One of my great joys of the holiday season is cookies and hot coffee drinks! And I finally figured out how to make cookies that we can all eat! With my usual jump in with both feet attitude I began the Leptin Reset the Saturday after Thanksgiving. I had learned about it the day before. Now to be sure it wasn’t a huge change from what I was eating already so that made it much easier to make the shift. It was simply a change of when and how much I ate the same foods I was already eating. So what is the Leptin Reset? In short it is a way to reset your bodies sensitivity to the hormone Leptin. Leptin is what tells you to stop eating. It should go...
Read More2 years of GAPS part 1
We have been on GAPS for 2 years. I’m going to do a series of posts on each of us and our results from the 2 years. I was trying to do one on all of us but it got too long and complicated. So I will start with my eldest since she has the best story of us all. W has been gluten free since she turned 2 and has always followed a restricted diet trying to minimize her reactions to foods and keep her on an even keel. We followed the Specific Carbohydrate diet the year she was 2 until she was a little over 3. She saw lots of improvements on SCD but life was still crazy. She didn’t sleep and was very fussy and clingy. I now know that she had silent reflux that kept her...
