I recently purchased this book from Amazon. I am always looking for ways to explain our GAPS diet to my children so that they will understand and embrace the differences. While this book isn’t specifically about GAPS, Paleo and GAPS have a lot in common.
This is the story about some Paleo eating super hero kids who come and teach a child whose family has recently changed to Paleo eating to love and embrace this new way of life. They visit a factory where processed foods are being made and then a farmers market where they pick out food. Next the make up a paleo meal that seems to be a bowl of soup and a salad. Lastly they go and visit a playground where they see kids playing and see that the Paleo kids have more energy and aren’t moody.
It covers all the basics. My 8 year old and my 4 year old both loved the book. After 2 years on GAPS they have made peace with eating differently than their peers but it was still really nice for them to read a book about kids who eat like them. I could have easily substituted GAPS for Paleo in pretty much every instance in the book and not ruined it’s flow at all. Only one vegetable was mentioned that isn’t allowed on GAPS and that is sweet potato. You could leave that out or explain it to your children as I did.
The best thing is the recipe section at the back of the book. The pictures are really good and my children are really excited about making the recipes. They did contain one recipe for stuffed sweet potatoes and quite a bit more fruit than we usually eat but in general they were GAPS friendly recipes written in a kid friendly format. My daughters love to help me in the kitchen and they were very excited about trying these recipes. A couple of them did include ingredients that aren’t allowed on GAPS but those appeared to be easy to substitute or even had GAPS friendly substitutes listed. Many of the recipes are also easily made low oxalate if they aren’t LOD (Low Oxalate Diet) compliant as written. I think this book would be nice for children on a LOD as well who may question the need to eat differently from their peers.
I would recommend this book for children who are old enough for a longer picture book and young enough to still enjoy reading them. There were a lot of words on every page so some younger children might not be able to sit still long enough for the whole book however you could certainly summarize it. At the end of the book it said that the next book will be a book Kid Friendly Paleo Recipes. I am looking forward to getting that one when it comes out. (Since this was just released I don’t think it will be very soon.)
