This is part 2 of my interview with Lydia Shatney about the new class A Calm Mind. She is offering this together with 3 other Nutritional Therapists.
Here is part one of the interview where we discuss what Nutritional Therapy is and who can benefit from it. A Calm Mind Interview with Lydia Part 1
Go here for a list of symptoms that this course can help with.
A Calm Mind List of Symptoms

4. I tend to think of “mental health issues” as being rare. How common are mental health issues?

According to statistics found through the National Institute of Mental Health - Mental disorders are common in the United States and internationally. An estimated 26.2 percent of Americans ages 18 and older — about one in four adults — suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year. Also, mental disorders are the leading cause of disability in the U.S. and Canada. Many people suffer from more than one mental disorder at a given time. Nearly half (45 percent) of those with any mental disorder meet criteria for 2 or more disorders, with severity strongly related to co-morbidity Approximately 20.9 million American adults, or about 9.5 percent of the U.S. population age 18 and older in a given year, have a mood disorder. Major Depressive Disorder is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. for ages 15-44.Major depressive disorder affects approximately 14.8 million American adults, or about 6.7 percent of the U.S. population age 18 and older in a given year.

From what we see, mental illness is on the rise and may only continue to become more prevalent. Unless, the mass public learns that these illnesses can be prevented and start to act on that now - we are in for a rude awakening in the coming generations. Sadly, we are degenerating. The hopeful thing is we can heal our bodies through nutrition, and through food.

5. Is it possible to really “heal” mental health issues with diet?

While I cannot make a claim that everyone could be entirely healed through the information taught in this course, I can say that I do believe anyone who takes this course and applies what is taught will see improvement. I like to say, “There can only be disease where there is a medium.” If the body is not given the raw ingredients it needs to perform optimally, what we end up with is dysfunction and disease. Now granted there will be some of us who have been born without things working perfectly, however we can still improve health in these situations. I believe through education, application and the support gained through this course, the forum and the community are going to impact the health of many for the better.

5. Tell me about the three other Nutritional Therapists, Ann, Brenda & Melanie that you are working with on this course. What sorts of skills do they bring to the table?

First let me start out by simply introducing my co-hosts if you will and sharing their websites with you. Melanie Christner of Honest Body. Ann Curtis of The Coconut Frontier and Brenda Baran of BrendaBaran.com. You can also read our About Us page from our course site if you’d like.

I first met Ann, as she lived local to me during the time we both were in the Nutritional Therapy Association training program. We decided to meet to study and traveled to our weekend workshops in Connecticut together. We became fast friends. Ann has a keen eye for research and can retain information well. She has written several guest posts on my site as well. Ann will bring a lot to the table in this course - she plans to go back to school to get her masters too! Ann is a peaceful sweet soul -I think folks will enjoy her teaching.

I met Melanie next, as Ann & I roomed with her at the first weekend workshop. Melanie and I had quite a bit in common including that we are both the mother of 4 children. Melanie is also a certified GAPS Practitioner, trained by Dr. Natasha Campbell McBride. Melanie is one of the most calm collected people I know, very patient and very wise. She embodies the very results we are aiming to see folks achieve through taking this course.

Finally, I met Brenda in our first class training. Brenda stood out to me almost immediately. She was very engaged in the class, asked a lot of questions and seemed to be quite intellectual. I was impressed by her wit and was able to get to know her much better at the second weekend workshop as she joined Ann, Melanie and I as a roommate. Brenda had experience working as a medical assistant for a doctor who practices the very information we are teaching in this course with his clients -mostly through supplementation and testing, not so much the nutritional piece. Brenda learned a lot through her experience as an MA and is a valuable asset to our team!

6. How much work will this class be? What happens if a participant can’t keep up?

I’ll be quite frank -this course will require effort on the part of the participant. However, it’s designed to go through at your own pace. We will be presenting new materials weekly over the course of 10 weeks with support on a private Facebook forum. It’s entirely up to the participants how much they want to make of the course. There is a lot of information as well. Much of the information will take time to implement, however some of it can be implemented immediately if you have, what I like to call ‘fires to put out’. It’s really not an issue trying to ‘keep up’ because we want everyone to go at a pace that works for their lifestyle. Here’s a really cool perk - although we will only monitor and support the Facebook group for 12 weeks, we keep the facebook group open for the participants to support each other. When we offer the course again in the future you will have access to us yet again to ask your questions. The cool thing about this is that you will have had more time to go through the material, apply things and likely have even more questions. Our goals is to be as realistically supportive as we can be so that everyone has a successful experience with the course material.

7. Is this class appropriate for someone who is caring for an elderly adult or a child with a mental illness?

Absolutely. Who more than a caretaker needs support like what is offered in this course.

8. What else should my readers know about this class?

This class is very in depth and the value is probably a lot more than we are charging. We can’t help but be thorough in our approach since we are all to aware of how much misinformation is out there as well as how much we have to fight for our health in this day and age. There are many practical facets of the course that I think will be of incredible value to those who live busy lives and don’t have time to research or map out their own health game plans. Not to mention, I truly believe we can save people money from medical bills and the stress of searching for answers.

Here are some testimonials from other classes that Lydia has taught.

I just wanted to say that this is the best class I have ever taken!! The price of this class is a bargain given the amount of information that you offer. The facebook page is a wonderful idea where members can exchange information and ask questions. I love the fact that one can go at their own pace and not feel pressured to keep up.
I have mentioned this class to so many people! From where I stand, unless you are a medical professional and are familiar with digestive issues, this is by far the best place to learn everything you didn’t know about your gut. This class offers REAL solutions to help heal your body and that to me is priceless!
I must say putting all the lessons on one page is a tremendous time saver and makes it just that much easier to refer to in the future! Thank you!
As far as implementing, I started making beef kvass and love it. I am going to start fermenting garlic and onions when they are ready from my garden (fingers crossed). I also intend to ferment as many vegetables that I can this summer. I will attempt to try everything you have mentioned if it means living a healthier life. We have only one body and most of us abuse it (unknowingly sometimes) until it starts to “talk back” or not respond like it used to!
Thank you so very much for offering this class!! I just can’t believe how much I have learned! ~ Maura
I cannot tell you how beneficial the course has been. I really feel I am on the right track to fine tuning my digestion and hopefully better managing outbreaks of candida and sugar cravings. Things have already improved just with the HCL and I’m hoping will just continue to improve with more fermented foods. For “information lovers” like me, the value of this course is IMMENSE. Seriously, I personally think you could charge $300 and it would still be a bargain. ~ Alison
I am so thankful that I found your website and this ecourse at just the right time. Over the past 7 years I have struggled with my digestion and overall health. I have seen over 10 doctors/specialists and have had too-many-to-count procedures/surgeries/lab work/urgent care and ER visits. Everything I have done thus far has just been a band-aid until I found your course. I FINALLY feel like I have hope for healing my gut. I really appreciate your approach to the basics of digestion; something none of the doctors referred to! I also appreciate access to you and the FB group at anytime and now that you have a page with all the info in one spot, it’s even better! Being able to go through the course at your own pace is key and I don’t feel pressure to “keep up” with everyone.Again, thank you so much and I would definitely recommend this course to others! ~ Kristy
