Healthy Play Food Give Away!
I know that many of my readers are parents. Even those who aren’t probably have children in their life that they love. This give away is going to make the children in someone’s life very happy.
One of the first “big” gifts that I gave to my older daughter was a play kitchen. She was not quite two when we got it for her for Christmas. She immediately loved that kitchen and still plays with it at nearly 9 years old. One conundrum that I faced with that play kitchen however was how to stock it. My daughter is allergic to wheat and I have always tried to feed her healthy foods. I didn’t want to give her a bunch of fake processed foods that she couldn’t even eat to play with in her kitchen. Unfortunately that seems to be most of what the “play food” industry offered.
As a former Montessori teacher I give a lot of thought into the message that toys impart. Giving my child lots of junk food to play with and then expecting her to eat only real food is pretty incongruous. Not that I think occasionally playing with a fake donut will make my daughter a sugar junkie for life, but I know that everything teaches something. Providing “real” play food for my children teaches them that these foods are important. Maria Montessori said “Play is the work of the child”. My children are beginning to learn how to cook when they make their play meals. It may not seem like much but they will transfer those skills over to the real stove and real food one day. Giving them play real foods at this time in their life gives those foods a sense of normalcy that will continue for the rest of my children’s lives.
Earlier this summer I came across Bess Mess on Etsy. Bess makes “Real” Play Food. She makes not just fruits and vegetables but also raw milk jugs, Fermented Cod Liver Oil, Olive Oil, Lard, Coconut Oil and Butter! (My lard was MIA for this photo shoot. Sorry!)
Head on over to her Etsy shop and see what she has for sale right now! She loves doing custom orders but those take some time so get your order in early if you want it in time for Christmas!
But first the give away.
Bess has provided me with a set of play food to give away. This will be perfect for anyone on GAPS or simply wanting to teach their kids about real food. (Plates not included). Doesn’t this look like a tasty breakfast of Fried eggs, Bacon, Kale, and Strawberries?
My 4 year old daughter loves playing with this food (so does my 8 year old). Here she is with her breakfast.
Here she is cooking everything.
Adding some coconut oil
And taking a big bite! Delicious!
So if you want to win this breakfast you will need to enter the give away below. I will be checking on your entries and if you are not signed up for my newsletter or haven’t done what you said in your entries you will not win. This give away is only open to residents of the United States.
Here again are the foods that one lucky winner will receive.

Thanks for running this giveaway. I have thought for a long time how silly it is to have food in my daughter’s kitchen we don’t eat or even like! What a great alternative. It just makes sense!
I especially love her picture taking a bite![:)](../wp-includes/images/smilies/simple-smile.png)
This food looks so good I would love to win it![:)](../wp-includes/images/smilies/simple-smile.png)
We would love REAL “play food.” Kiddos with food restrictions definitely get mixed messages from mama when she hands him symbols of “bad” foods and says its okay to pretend to eat… kind of a double standard…would we hand our kids fake beer bottles and cigars and tell them to have fun with those too? We would love this!
Great giveaway! I am wanting play food for my son that is real food, so this was perfect timing to spark some ideas![:)](../wp-includes/images/smilies/simple-smile.png)
Kefir, kombucha, kevita, fermented veggies:)
